Gallant’s firing over strategic differences leads to widespread demonstrations as Netanyahu’s coalition faces internal and external pressures.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to fire Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has triggered significant protests across Israel, with thousands demonstrating in Tel Aviv and outside Netanyahu’s residence. Gallant, who was seen by many as a moderating force in Netanyahu’s far-right coalition government, was dismissed after public disagreements over military strategy and his stance on Ultra-Orthodox conscription.
Netanyahu cited “damaged trust” in the relationship, particularly in handling the war with Gaza, but Gallant’s removal has sparked controversy, especially with ongoing concerns about the fate of Israeli hostages held in Gaza. The Hostage Families Forum voiced alarm, calling on the new defence minister to prioritize negotiations for their release.
While some, including far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, supported the move, calling Gallant an obstacle to achieving “absolute victory” over Hamas, opposition figures condemned it as a reckless political maneuver that risks Israel’s security during a time of war. Gallant had previously criticized Netanyahu’s goal of “total victory” over Hamas and advocated for a diplomatic solution, gaining significant popularity both within Israel and internationally.
The political fallout from this decision is expected to be far-reaching, potentially reshaping Israel’s war cabinet and security policies in the middle of an ongoing conflict.
