Deputy PM Says Attack on Slovakian PM Was ‘Politically Motivated’ – As It Happened

Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico ‘Fighting for His Life’ After Being Shot

On May 15, 2024, Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot five times outside the House of Culture in Handlová while meeting supporters, leaving him in critical condition. His deputy prime minister, Tomáš Taraba, reported that Fico was no longer in a life-threatening condition after undergoing surgery and was expected to survive. The attack was initially seen as politically motivated, particularly following Slovakia’s recent presidential election won by a Fico ally.

Global Condemnation and Outrage
The attack on Fico drew widespread condemnation from global leaders, including US President Joe Biden, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Russian President Vladimir Putin. They described the attack as an unacceptable act of violence against democracy. The suspect, a 71-year-old former security guard, was arrested and reportedly held a gun license legally. His actions were seen as a reaction to Fico’s government policies, particularly its handling of the media.
