Employee Asked to Teach Boss Accounting in 8 Days After Being Fired for Poor Performance

A Singapore accounts executive, terminated for not meeting expectations, is now tasked with teaching his boss everything he knows within his final eight days

In an unusual workplace scenario, an accounts executive in Singapore claims he was fired after falling short of his boss’s expectations but was later asked to teach her accounting basics during his final eight days of employment. The employee, who had no prior accounting experience when hired, found himself in the uncomfortable position of being expected to impart his limited knowledge to his boss, who allegedly had no accounting background.

“I was hired as an accounts executive without prior experience, and after not meeting my boss’s expectations, I was let go,” the employee shared. “However, my boss now wants me to teach her everything she needs to know, including payroll, accounts payable and receivable (AP/AR), GST filing, and using the accounting software—within just eight working days.”

The employee expressed frustration, noting that while his boss had “confidence,” there was a fine line between that and “cockiness,” given her lack of understanding and the steep learning curve required. The situation, which was already complicated by his own perceived shortcomings, left him doubting the feasibility of the task.

“I feel sorry for the next person who will have to take over my role given how rushed and disorganized the onboarding process is,” he added.

He later shared a summary of his brief and challenging experience at the company, which sparked a wave of responses from online users. Many encouraged him to avoid overextending himself during his final days. “Just do your remaining days and leave,” one commenter advised. Others were more blunt, suggesting that he should do the bare minimum since he had already been let go. “There’s no need to go above and beyond. You’ve been terminated or resigned—just do what’s necessary,” another person suggested.

Despite the unusual request, the employee seemed resigned to the situation, noting that he was already in the process of preparing to leave the company.
