Sultan Abu Bakar checkpoint incident highlights rising road accidents amid traffic congestion.
On the evening of Tuesday, December 19, a red car caught fire at the Sultan Abu Bakar Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) Complex, a key checkpoint on the Singapore-Malaysia border. The incident, which took place at approximately 9:48 p.m., was captured on dashcam by a vehicle driving behind. The video, which quickly went viral, shows the car suddenly igniting after slowing down near a boom barrier.
The alarming footage has since gained significant attention, with over 50,000 views and widespread concern about the driver’s safety. The driver, Muhd Suhail, later shared his experience on social media, explaining that he was able to put out the flames using his car’s fire extinguisher and exit the vehicle safely in just 45 seconds.
This incident adds to the growing concerns over road safety at the Singapore-Malaysia land checkpoints, which are notorious for heavy traffic congestion, especially during peak times. Despite the cause of the fire still being under investigation, the event has raised awareness about the importance of preparedness for such emergencies.
Authorities continue to focus on reducing traffic accidents and improving safety measures at these high-traffic border points.
