Israel and Hamas at War After Surprise Attacks from Gaza Strip

Hamas launches its largest aerial and ground offensive in years, with Israeli death toll rising as war escalates.

Israel and Hamas are engaged in intense conflict following a large-scale surprise attack launched by the Palestinian militant group from the Gaza Strip. Early on Saturday, sirens blared across Israel, reaching as far as Jerusalem, signaling the beginning of what Hamas claimed was a barrage of 5,000 rockets. The attack, one of the largest of its kind in recent years, has sent shockwaves across the region.

In addition to the aerial bombardment, Hamas militants infiltrated several Israeli towns and villages, an unprecedented move since Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported that at one point, seven towns and villages were under Hamas control. By midday, Israeli officials confirmed that at least 100 people had been killed, with over 900 others injured, a number expected to rise as the situation evolves.

In retaliation, Israel launched extensive airstrikes on Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 198 Palestinians, according to initial reports. A heavy military response is underway, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring a state of war and vowing that “our enemy will pay a price the type of which it has never known.”

Casualties have continued to mount as Israeli security forces work to regain control of the affected areas. Footage circulating on social media shows captured civilians, including elderly individuals and a young woman, being taken to Gaza by Hamas fighters.

The ongoing hostilities come after years of relative stability, with the surprise nature of the attack catching Israeli security forces off guard. As both sides prepare for more violence, the international community watches closely, fearing further escalation.
