Zelenskiy Responds to UK Minister’s Criticism: ‘We Could Express Gratitude Personally’

Ukrainian president addresses UK minister’s complaints over perceived lack of gratitude for military aid.

On July 12, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy responded to comments from UK Defence Minister Ben Wallace, who had expressed frustration over what he saw as a lack of gratitude from Ukraine for the military support it has received from the UK. Speaking at a NATO summit in Vilnius, Zelenskiy said he “didn’t understand” the criticism, adding that the Ukrainian people are deeply grateful for the support provided, but they also expect clear and specific commitments, particularly regarding NATO membership.

Zelenskiy, speaking with a sense of both diplomacy and defiance, suggested that Ukraine could personally express its gratitude to Wallace, noting that Ukraine’s focus remains on securing the necessary military and diplomatic support to win the war against Russia.

The controversy arose after Wallace remarked that some Ukrainians appeared to be less than thankful for the UK’s weapon shipments and assistance. However, Zelenskiy responded by underscoring that Ukraine’s priorities remain in securing not only military aid but also long-term security guarantees, particularly in the form of NATO membership.

He also addressed the broader context of NATO’s role in Ukraine’s future, saying that while Ukraine understood the constraints of the ongoing war, an invitation to NATO would have been a vital step in providing clarity and security for the country. Zelenskiy reaffirmed that while Ukraine’s path to NATO membership may not be immediate due to the war, the country still values the assistance from its Western allies.

Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak distanced himself from Wallace’s remarks, emphasizing that the UK remains committed to supporting Ukraine as it defends itself against Russian aggression. Sunak reiterated that the UK’s stance on helping Ukraine was based on solidarity and strategic alignment, rather than expecting anything in return.

The day’s discussions also included Ukraine’s ongoing military progress near Bakhmut, the latest strikes by Russia on Kyiv, and NATO’s evolving framework for Ukraine’s future integration into the alliance.
