The Former Prime Minister, Known for Political Scandals and Influence, Passes Away in Milan
Silvio Berlusconi, Italy’s longest-serving prime minister and a figure whose life was defined by both political triumph and scandal, has died at the age of 86. The former media tycoon, who served three terms in office, passed away at Milan’s San Raffaele hospital, after battling a lung infection connected to chronic myelomonocytic leukemia. His health had deteriorated significantly over the past months, with the illness leading to multiple hospital stays earlier this year.
A billionaire businessman with deep ties to the media industry, Berlusconi entered politics in the 1990s, founding the Forza Italia party as Italy’s traditional right-wing parties began to crumble. His leadership of Italy spanned nearly two decades, but his tenure was marred by numerous scandals, including charges of corruption, tax fraud, and allegations related to sex parties. Despite these controversies, Berlusconi managed to mount a political comeback in 2017, continuing to wield significant influence over the Italian political landscape.
Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s current prime minister, paid tribute to Berlusconi, calling him a “fighter” who stood firm in his beliefs. “His courage and determination made him one of Italy’s most influential figures,” she said. Despite their differences, particularly over the war in Ukraine and Berlusconi’s close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Meloni acknowledged his pivotal role in shaping modern Italian politics.
Putin, in a rare personal statement, described Berlusconi as a “true friend” and a “great statesman,” echoing the praise from the Russian embassy in Rome. Meanwhile, Berlusconi’s Italian allies, including Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, expressed their sorrow at his death, calling it the end of an era. Crosetto spoke emotionally about Berlusconi, describing him as a “great Italian man” and a friend whom he loved dearly.
In addition to his political career, Berlusconi was also a significant figure in the world of sports. He was the owner of the prestigious football club AC Milan for over 30 years, leading the team to multiple international championships. His death prompted an outpouring of grief from supporters, with many gathering outside the hospital in Milan, waving Forza Italia and AC Milan flags to honor his memory.
A funeral service will be held in Milan on Wednesday, with Italy observing a national day of mourning to remember the man who left an indelible mark on the country’s politics, media, and sporting history.
