Bolsonaro Supporters Demand Coup as Lula’s Inauguration Nears

Protests Persist Amid Concerns Over Devotion to Outgoing President

In Brazil, radical supporters of outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro are intensifying calls for military intervention as Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva prepares to assume office. Protesters, including a marine reservist known as the “Soldier of the Homeland” and a cosmetics saleswoman calling herself “the Patriot,” have been stationed outside military bases like the one in Boa Vista since November 1, the day after Bolsonaro lost his bid for reelection.

Chanting slogans like “SOS armed forces! Save our nation!” these demonstrators hope the military will annul Lula’s victory and reinstall Bolsonaro. Despite their persistence, no evidence has emerged to support claims of electoral fraud, and the military has shown no inclination to intervene.

With Lula set to take office on January 1, concerns are growing over the unwavering devotion of Bolsonaro’s supporters and the potential for unrest as the transition of power proceeds.
