EU Leaders Lean Towards Offshore Asylum Centres Amid Migration Crisis

Tragedy Near Kos Island Sparks Debate on Tougher Border Measures

European leaders are expected to support the creation of offshore asylum centres, a move aimed at controlling migration into the EU, as a deadly incident off the Greek island of Kos brings renewed attention to the issue. Four people, including two toddlers, tragically lost their lives after falling from an overcrowded speedboat attempting to reach Italy from the Turkish coast. This event, which also resulted in several injuries, highlights the dangers faced by migrants trying to reach Europe.

As the EU prepares for a leaders’ summit, migration is set to dominate discussions. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, has called for the exploration of “return hubs” outside the EU as part of a broader strategy to manage migration. This proposal is inspired by a controversial agreement between Italy and Albania and marks a significant shift in EU policy. Diplomats note that such a proposal would have been unthinkable just a year or two ago, indicating a change in the EU’s approach to border security and asylum seekers.
