“All Quiet on the Western Front” Dominates, while Austin Butler, Cate Blanchett, and Kerry Condon Shine
The 2023 BAFTA Awards ceremony showcased British cinema at its finest, with “All Quiet on the Western Front” sweeping multiple categories, including Best Film, Best Cinematography, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The red carpet, filled with dazzling stars, featured Richard E. Grant in a dramatic cape, Alison Hammond channeling her “One Show” charm, and Florence Pugh turning heads in an orange net dress.
Among the night’s standout winners were Cate Blanchett, who took home the Best Actress award for her role in Tár, and Austin Butler, who earned the Best Actor nod for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Elvis. Emma Mackey, star of Sex Education, won the Rising Star Award, solidifying her place in the spotlight.
In the Best Director category, Edward Berger was honored for his work on All Quiet on the Western Front, while Martin McDonagh won Best Original Screenplay for The Banshees of Inisherin. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio earned Best Animated Feature, and Avatar: The Way of Water triumphed in Best Visual Effects.
The ceremony, hosted by Richard E. Grant and Alison Hammond, also included some memorable mishaps, such as a mix-up when Carey Mulligan’s name was mistakenly announced instead of Kerry Condon’s for Best Supporting Actress – a blunder quickly edited out of the TV broadcast. Nonetheless, Condon was recognized for her standout performance in The Banshees of Inisherin. Barry Keoghan won Best Supporting Actor for his role in the same film.
In a night of celebration for British cinema, The Banshees of Inisherin also won Best British Film, and Charlotte Wells received the award for Outstanding British Debut for her poignant film Aftersun.
