Progressive Gains Bolster Lula’s Campaign Ahead of Presidential Runoff
In Brazil’s recent elections, while Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva narrowly missed a first-round victory in the presidential race, the left found reasons to celebrate. Notable wins included the historic election of two transgender candidates, Erika Hilton and Duda Salabert, to Congress, alongside two Indigenous women. These victories signal progress in diversifying Brazil’s political landscape.
Hilton expressed optimism about championing LGBTQ+ rights, stating, “Our mandate in Brasília will be more organized, more committed, and closer to people.” Despite a challenging political climate, these successes represent a step forward for marginalized communities.
Meanwhile, Lula remains the favorite to win the October 30 runoff against Jair Bolsonaro, needing just over 50% of the vote to secure the presidency.
