Apple’s Drama Triumphs with Three Major Awards Amid Controversial Moment at Ceremony
At the 2022 Academy Awards, “Coda” made history by winning Best Picture, marking the first time a film from a streaming service, Apple TV+, claimed the prestigious honor. The film, a remake of “La Famille Bélier,” tells the story of the only hearing member in a deaf family. Along with Best Picture, “Coda” also saw Troy Kotsur win Best Supporting Actor, becoming only the second deaf actor to earn an Oscar, following Marlee Matlin’s win in 1987.
However, the night was marred by an unprecedented confrontation between Will Smith and Chris Rock. After Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, Smith approached the stage and slapped the comedian. The moment overshadowed the evening’s celebrations, leading to widespread attention and controversy.
