Philippine maids turn waste into art in a creative fashion show to highlight sustainability.
In a powerful demonstration of creativity and environmental consciousness, Filipino domestic workers in Singapore recently showcased their design skills by turning everyday waste into high-fashion creations. The event, a “Trashion Show”, was organized by the Kaugnay group, an association for Filipina domestic workers, and supported by the Migrants’ worker group HOME (Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics).
The unique fashion show, held on November 26 at HFSE International School, was a striking display of upcycled art. The women transformed discarded materials—such as Nescafe 3-in-1 coffee packets, bottle caps, plastic bags, and newspapers—into stunning dresses and accessories. Each design was a testament to their ingenuity and patience, with participants putting in countless hours to craft their pieces.
The event was dubbed a “full-on trashion extravaganza” by HOME, celebrating both the artistic talent of the participants and the message of sustainability. By using waste materials, the show highlighted the environmental importance of reducing, reusing, and upcycling—particularly in addressing the pressing issue of plastic pollution, which is a major contributor to ocean degradation.
The success of the Trashion Show not only showcased the creativity of migrant workers but also sparked important conversations about waste reduction and the role of everyday items in environmental conservation. HOME praised the women for their craftsmanship and the Kaugnay team for organizing such a meaningful event that combined art, advocacy, and fashion.
