A Mother Expresses Concern Over Rising Food Prices as Children Face Higher Costs
In a recent social media post, a Singaporean mother shared her frustrations over the impact of inflation on school canteen food prices, highlighting how even children are not spared from rising living costs. The post, shared on Monday, January 15, 2024, featured a photo showing the “current price” and the new prices set to take effect from February 1, 2024.
According to the image, small food portions, which previously cost between $1.20 and $1.50, will be increased to $1.50, while larger portions will see a slight rise from $2.00 to $2.20. Additionally, two popular stalls offering rice with one vegetable and two meats, as well as a specialty dish, will see their prices go up from $2.20 to $2.50.
In her Facebook post on the ‘Complaint Singapore’ group, Rachel Choi, the mother who shared the information, remarked: “In these times, even children (young students) can’t escape inflation… their allowance will likely remain the same but prices will go up 📈.”
Her post resonated with many netizens who commented on the challenges of inflation affecting everyday life. One user pointed out that canteen hawkers and food sellers also need to maintain a sustainable livelihood, acknowledging that inflation is a global issue impacting everyone, not just students.
The price hikes in school canteens add to the growing concern for families already facing the pressures of increasing costs in various sectors, with many questioning how this will affect children’s allowances and household budgets in the long run.
