Labour Leader Promises Rapid Action, While Rishi Sunak Fears Losing His Seat
Keir Starmer has declared that a “new age of hope and opportunity” is on the horizon as millions of voters prepare for what could be a transformative general election in the UK. With final polls predicting an unprecedented Labour victory, Starmer said he was “ready for government” and prepared to lead his cabinet in an immediate push for change.
As the election campaign reached its climax, reports revealed that Rishi Sunak’s allies were increasingly resigned to defeat, with final opinion polls suggesting that Labour would secure a historic win. Starmer, speaking to supporters in Scotland, emphasized the boundless potential of Britain and stressed that the British people deserved a government that could match their aspirations. He also expressed confidence that his leadership would begin the process of national renewal, aiming to rebuild the country and deliver tangible results right from the start.
Starmer promised an energetic first few days in office, including pushing back the parliamentary recess to launch his legislative agenda. He also made it clear to his shadow cabinet that immediate action would be expected, emphasizing that any necessary meetings or calls should have been made months before if they were not urgent after the election.
Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak campaigned in traditionally safe Conservative areas but privately expressed concern that his seat, along with those of several key cabinet ministers, was at risk. Some polls forecasted that up to 16 cabinet members could lose their seats, potentially handing Starmer the largest majority since 1832.
