No Major Damage or Injuries Reported Following Strong Shake

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck near Wellington, New Zealand, early on October 6, 2024, with no reports of injuries or significant damage. The quake, which hit at 5:08 AM local time, was centered 25 kilometers west of Wellington at a depth of 30 kilometers. GeoNet, New Zealand’s government seismic monitoring agency, noted that more than 37,000 people across the country, including some as far as Auckland, reported feeling the tremor. While the earthquake was strong, it appears to have caused no major disruptions.
