Man in Court After Alleged Wedding Gift Theft Totalling $50,000

Suspect accused of stealing red packet boxes from hotel ballroom; $3,000 recovered by police during arrest

A 36-year-old Singaporean man has been formally charged with theft following allegations that he stole two money boxes containing approximately $50,000 in cash from a wedding reception.

Lee Yi Wei appeared in court on Wednesday (9 April), accused of removing the boxes from the foyer area of the grand ballroom at the JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach. It remains uncertain whether he was an invited guest at the event. His next court mention is scheduled for 16 April.

The police were first alerted to the incident at 12:49pm on 5 April, when reports were made of red packet boxes having gone missing during a wedding function at a hotel along Beach Road.

Following swift investigative work, which included analysis of CCTV footage and on-ground enquiries, officers were able to identify and apprehend the suspect on 7 April. Upon arrest, authorities recovered $3,000 in cash believed to be part of the stolen amount.

Initial findings suggest the theft may have been premeditated. Investigators noted that the suspect changed his clothing after the alleged crime, presumably in an attempt to evade identification.

In an official statement issued on 8 April, police emphasised their firm stance against such offences: “The police have zero tolerance for such audacious acts and will not hesitate to take action against individuals who flagrantly violate the law.”

If found guilty of theft, Lee could face up to three years in prison and a fine.

The case has drawn public attention not only for the sizeable amount stolen, but also for the bold nature of the alleged act, carried out in a prominent hotel venue during a private celebration.
