The actresses reflect on their past relationships and the lessons learned about happiness and self-worth
Self-love is the foundation of all relationships, a valuable lesson shared by actresses Michelle Chia and Phyllis Quek in a heartfelt conversation during the latest episode of Camping Around the World. The pair embarked on a memorable trip to Chiang Rai, Thailand, where they enjoyed glamping, hot air balloon rides, and outdoor adventures, all while sharing their personal journeys.
Phyllis, 52, who has been married to Australian businessman David Cox since 2012, opened up about her upbringing in a single-parent family, which led to feelings of insecurity. Reflecting on her past relationships, Phyllis confessed, “I wanted to build a family, but I think my reasons for dating were misguided. I was seeking someone to depend on, but that mindset often led me to meet the wrong people.”
In the past, Phyllis admitted to feeling devastated after each breakup. She would cry, unable to cope with being alone, sometimes even resorting to alcohol to help her sleep. Michelle, 49, was taken aback by Phyllis’ vulnerability, noting that such emotional reliance on others can be dangerous. “When you let someone see your weakness, it’s easy for them to take advantage of you,” Michelle pointed out.
Phyllis agreed, realising that she had been quick to fall in love without understanding what truly mattered. Over time, she has grown stronger, learning to value herself. “Now, I live for me. Not for anyone else.”
Michelle echoed these thoughts, recalling the advice she once received: “You can’t rely on anyone for your happiness.” She then shared her own experiences, revealing that her relationships typically lasted between six and eight years. Despite recognising red flags, she would often convince herself that things could improve, blaming herself for not trying harder to change.
Michelle’s marriage to actor Shaun Chen, from 2009 to 2011, was one such relationship where she tried to make things work, despite challenges. But eventually, Michelle learned to move on swiftly after ending relationships. “Once I let go, I don’t look back,” she explained. “I see every chapter as an experience that adds value to my life. I just turn the page and look forward to the next.”
Both women now view relationships with greater clarity, understanding that their happiness comes from within and not from others. Their story is a powerful reminder of the importance of self-love and personal growth.
