Patient Isolated in London Hospital After Monkeypox Diagnosis

Case linked to recent travel to Nigeria, with authorities tracking possible contacts.

A patient in London is receiving treatment for monkeypox at Guy’s and St Thomas’ infectious disease unit, following a recent trip to Nigeria, where the rare virus is believed to have been contracted. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed the case and stated that the patient is in isolation. Although monkeypox can spread through close contact, it is not easily transmitted, and most affected individuals recover within weeks. Health authorities are contacting those who may have been in close proximity to the patient, including fellow passengers on the same flight. Symptoms of monkeypox include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and a distinctive rash that progresses into scabs.
