Indonesia’s State-Owned Firm to Invest in New Vessels for Liquefied Gas Transport
Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), the shipping arm of Indonesia’s state-owned energy giant Pertamina, has announced plans to add six very large gas carriers (VLGCs) to its fleet in 2024. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to enhance its capacity for liquefied gas transportation, including LPG and ammonia.
The company, which is investing up to US$3 billion over the next five years to rejuvenate and grow its fleet, recently launched two new VLGCs built by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries in South Korea. Each of these vessels boasts an impressive capacity of 91,000 cubic meters, making them some of the largest in the world.
PIS aims to further strengthen its position in the global gas transport sector with this fleet expansion, a move that underscores Indonesia’s growing role in the energy industry.
