Philippines’ President to Spotlight West Philippine Sea Dispute at Shangri-La Dialogue

Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasizes the need for multilateral solutions amid rising tensions in the South China Sea.

Philippines President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has arrived in Singapore ahead of his keynote speech at the 21st Shangri-La Dialogue, hosted by the International Institute for Strategic Studies from May 31 to June 2. In his address, Marcos is expected to reaffirm the Philippines’ legal and geopolitical stance on the contentious West Philippine Sea, a focal point in its territorial dispute with China.

The West Philippine Sea, part of the broader South China Sea, has become a hotspot for international tension due to overlapping claims. China’s extensive territorial assertions encroach on the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, a conflict that has drawn global concern. The United States and other nations have condemned China’s actions, citing risks to regional stability and adherence to international law.

In a pre-departure statement, Marcos underscored the importance of promoting a rules-based international order and advocating for constructive multilateral diplomacy. “This dialogue is a critical platform to convey our perspective on security and defense challenges in the region,” he remarked from Villamor Air Base on May 28.

The Shangri-La Dialogue gathers defense and foreign ministers worldwide to discuss pressing security issues, offering a unique opportunity for the Philippines to highlight its commitment to peaceful and collaborative solutions amidst ongoing geopolitical challenges.
