Poland’s Refugee Response: A Miracle or Unsustainable?

Poland has welcomed 2.5 million Ukrainians, but concerns grow about the long-term viability of the effort.

Poland’s response to the refugee crisis caused by the war in Ukraine has been nothing short of miraculous, with 2.5 million Ukrainians now residing in the country. Refugee centers in Warsaw offer essential services, such as baby food, free transport, and stipends, as volunteers provide critical support. Poland has rapidly integrated a massive number of refugees, with around one in 10 people in the country now Ukrainian. However, as the war continues, there are increasing concerns about how long this warm welcome can be sustained. Local officials like Jarosław Obremski highlight the scale of the challenge, noting the vast difference between Poland’s rapid intake and previous refugee responses in other countries like Germany.
