Protest Erupts Outside Jimmy Carr’s Cambridge Show Over Controversial Roma Joke

Demonstrators condemn remarks deemed offensive to Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities.

Approximately 100 protesters gathered outside the Corn Exchange in Cambridge on Wednesday evening to voice their outrage at comedian Jimmy Carr’s remarks, which have been criticized as racist and offensive towards Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities.

The demonstration, organized by Cambridge Stand Up To Racism, featured loud protests, placards, and speeches denouncing Carr’s comments. The controversy stems from a viral clip from his His Dark Material show, where Carr stated:

“When people talk about the Holocaust, they talk about the tragedy and horror of six million Jewish lives being lost to the Nazi war machine. But they never mention the thousands of Gypsies that were killed by the Nazis.”

The remark has drawn widespread condemnation for trivializing the genocide of Roma communities during the Holocaust. Protesters called for accountability and greater respect for marginalized groups, highlighting the importance of challenging harmful narratives.
