Rising Costs Threaten Suppliers, Factories, and Consumer Bills Amid Global Shortages
The UK faces mounting concerns over a winter energy crisis as wholesale gas prices hit record highs, driven by global supply shortages and dwindling reserves. Prices for winter gas surged over 20% to 218.4p per therm, with European markets experiencing a 10% rise. Analysts warn that a colder-than-average winter could deepen the crisis, straining household budgets and industrial production.
The crisis has already led to the collapse of several energy suppliers and disrupted industries reliant on gas. Compounding the issue, the UK’s limited gas storage capacity and infrastructure outages, including a fire at a key electricity import cable, have increased reliance on gas power plants. Adding to the pressure, reduced gas flows from Russia via the Yamal-Europe pipeline have exacerbated supply shortages across Europe.
Consumers are bracing for higher energy bills and potential supplier failures, while sectors like food and drink face pre-Christmas disruptions. Despite government assurances of sufficient gas supplies, experts caution that prolonged low temperatures could intensify the strain, evoking memories of 1970s-style energy restrictions.
As the “winter gas season” begins on October 1, all eyes are on energy markets, with calls for long-term strategies to bolster resilience against future crises.
