Houthi Attacks on Shipping Vessels Disrupt Key Trade Route Amid Gaza Conflict
Houthi rebels in Yemen have intensified attacks on commercial vessels in the southern Red Sea since mid-November, citing Israel’s military actions in Gaza as their justification. The attacks have included attempts to board ships, missile strikes, and drone assaults, with limited damage reported. However, in one incident, the tanker Galaxy Leader was successfully hijacked.
The escalating security threats have prompted major shipping companies, including Maersk and MSC, to reroute or halt operations in the region. In response, the U.S. has announced a maritime coalition to safeguard shipping routes. Energy giant BP has also suspended all oil and gas shipments through the Red Sea due to the heightened risks.
The crisis poses a serious challenge to global trade, as the Red Sea is a crucial shipping corridor linking Europe, Asia, and East Africa via the Suez Canal. Any prolonged disruption could lead to increased costs, supply chain delays, and potential economic fallout.
