Moscow seeks NATO restrictions and security guarantees, warning of potential military consequences
Russia has presented a controversial list of security demands aimed at reducing tensions in Europe, particularly regarding the crisis over Ukraine. The proposals, issued by Russia’s foreign ministry, include barring Ukraine from joining NATO and restricting troop and weapon deployments on NATO’s eastern flank, effectively rolling back NATO’s military presence to pre-1997 levels.
The eight-point draft treaty comes as Russian forces gather near Ukraine’s borders, raising international alarm. Moscow has indicated that disregarding its security interests could provoke a “military response” reminiscent of the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.
The demands have already faced significant pushback from Western officials, who consider many of the proposals non-negotiable. NATO has previously affirmed its “open-door policy,” allowing countries like Ukraine to pursue membership.
Russia’s list underscores its concerns over NATO’s eastward expansion and perceived threats to its security. However, critics argue that these demands are an attempt to reassert influence over neighboring states and undermine their sovereignty.
The situation remains precarious as diplomatic efforts continue. Western nations have emphasized the need for de-escalation and dialogue, warning of severe consequences should Russia take military action in Ukraine.
