With RTS Link Completion on the Horizon, Singapore Aims to Boost Local Economy and Attract Malaysian Shoppers
As the Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link nears 50% completion and is set for launch in 2026, Singapore has formed a new task force to help local businesses capitalise on the opportunities it presents. The task force, which will work towards utilising the link to rejuvenate Singapore’s retail sectors and heartland areas, was announced by Health Minister Ong Ye Kung on March 16 during an event in Woodlands North Plaza.
The RTS Link promises to enhance connectivity between Singapore and Johor Bahru, bringing both challenges and opportunities for businesses. While some businesses in Singapore may face competition from vendors in Johor Bahru, Ong sees potential for local retailers to attract Malaysian shoppers, especially as the link will likely draw Singaporeans to Johor Bahru for shopping trips.
Ong, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sembawang GRC, expressed his close involvement in the project due to the Woodlands North station being located in his constituency. He stated that the task force would focus on understanding how the rail link can rejuvenate the heartland and benefit local businesses, while also addressing concerns of businesses that might be affected by increased competition from across the border.
The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) confirmed that the task force will conduct consultations with heartland businesses and merchant associations, and plans to release its findings and recommendations by 2026. The task force, chaired by Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan, includes members from various government bodies, including the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Enterprise Singapore, and the National Development Ministry.
By the end of 2026, the RTS Link is expected to accommodate up to 10,000 passengers per hour, connecting Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru to Woodlands North in Singapore. Tan mentioned that preliminary work for the task force began in November 2024, with meetings involving grassroots leaders and business associations to ensure that the retail sector in Singapore can fully benefit from the rail link’s potential.
Sembawang GRC MP Mariam Jaafar and Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC MP Hany Soh will collaborate with the task force to engage local businesses and merchants’ associations, aiming to revitalise the heartland economy and ensure that all stakeholders benefit from the enhanced connectivity.
