Discrepancies in pay rates and unjust rest period compensation leave employee feeling exploited.
A Singaporean part-time worker recently took to social media to expose unfair pay practices and hidden contract terms that left him feeling exploited. After accepting a night shift job, he discovered that, despite being told he’d earn $8 per hour, his actual pay during rest periods was only $0.80 per hour — a mere 10% of his hourly wage. This occurred during the hours between 10 pm and 7 am, while the employee was still required to stay on the premises and be available for any incidents.
In addition to the poor compensation during rest periods, the worker found out that others were being paid $9 per hour for the same job. He also revealed that his pay remained the same despite working on a public holiday, with no additional holiday pay. Frustrated, he expressed that he was considering leaving the job and seeking help from the Ministry of Manpower, but was unsure how to proceed due to difficulty finding the correct complaint form.
The situation sparked a backlash online, with many netizens advising the worker to leave and seek better pay. They criticized the company for undervaluing his work and argued that part-time workers deserve much more than the $8 per hour, especially given the unreasonable rest period pay.
