Five-Year-Old Girl Rescued from Rubble with Serious Injuries, While Her Brother Escapes with Minor Scratches
In the aftermath of two powerful earthquakes that struck northern Syria, a poignant rescue story unfolded in the rebel-held province of Idlib. Omar Rahal, the local police chief, was searching through the wreckage of his cousin’s home in Harem when he heard a faint voice. Despite hours of digging without any sign of life, he suddenly heard five desperate words from beneath the rubble: “Get me out of here.”
Buried under concrete, five-year-old Jinan was trapped with her nine-month-old brother Abdullah, who she had been comforting as their home collapsed around them. Nearby, their mother, Suaad, lay lifeless, her arm extending as though trying to shield her children from the devastation. Rahal immediately sought help but realized he couldn’t free the children alone. He filmed the scene and sent the footage to his colleagues, triggering a wave of attention online. The video quickly went viral, symbolizing the heartbreak of the disaster.
With the help of his team, Rahal was able to rescue Abdullah, who sustained only minor injuries. However, Jinan’s situation was dire: she was trapped by a concrete slab with an iron rod impaled through her leg. After a tense rescue operation, Jinan was freed and rushed to a makeshift hospital. While her leg injury is serious, the girl’s survival against all odds brings a glimmer of hope amid the tragedy that claimed the lives of her mother and many others in the region.
