Ukraine to Begin Evacuations in Kherson and Mykolaiv as Winter Approaches

Civilian Relocations Prompted by War-Damaged Infrastructure

As winter approaches, Ukraine has announced plans to evacuate civilians from the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions, which were heavily affected by Russian shelling. The damage to local infrastructure is deemed too severe for residents to survive the harsh winter conditions.

Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk confirmed that residents in the two southern regions will be relocated to safer areas in the central and western parts of the country. The Ukrainian government will provide transportation, accommodation, and medical assistance to those affected.

The evacuation follows Ukraine’s recent retaking of Kherson, a major military victory. However, it also underscores the challenges posed by extensive Russian attacks on Ukraine’s power infrastructure, complicating efforts to support civilians as the winter sets in.
