Uniqlo Opens New Store in Rome as Part of European Expansion Plans

Japanese Retailer Strengthens Presence in Europe with New Flagship Store

Uniqlo, the popular Japanese fashion retailer, has opened a new store in Rome on Thursday, April 18, 2024, marking a significant step in its efforts to expand further in Europe and North America. This is the second Uniqlo location in Italy and one of five new openings planned for Europe this spring and summer.

The new store in Rome is part of the company’s broader strategy to increase its footprint in Western markets, where it sees growing demand. Mark Barnatovic, the Chief Operating Officer of Uniqlo Italy, described the opening as a “natural step” to continue the company’s expansion in the region. In addition to Rome, other upcoming store openings will be in Nice, France, Edinburgh, and more locations in Milan and London.

Fast Retailing, Uniqlo’s parent company, reported strong revenue and profit from its European and North American operations in its most recent earnings report. Despite experiencing a slowdown in more mature markets like Japan, the company remains optimistic about its growth prospects in the West. “We have had a very positive response from customers in Italy and across Europe, and we feel this is the right time to expand,” said Barnatovic.

The new store opening also benefits from an increased appreciation of Japanese style and culture in Italy, according to Alessandro Poggi, Uniqlo’s Head of Marketing in Italy, suggesting that the brand’s distinct aesthetic is resonating with local consumers.
