A former HR professional makes a bold career change to honour her father’s unfulfilled dream of becoming a soldier.
In an inspiring act of determination, a 27-year-old woman from Singapore made the life-changing decision to leave her comfortable corporate job in human resources to pursue a career in the military, honouring her late father’s unfulfilled dream of serving in the army.
Ms Zhang, as she is known, explained to Lianhe Zaobao that her father, who had always aspired to become a soldier, was unable to meet the physical requirements due to skin issues. As a result, he pursued a career in law enforcement instead. Growing up, Zhang often accompanied her father in watching war films, sparking an early interest in the military and uniformed services.
Despite having worked a stable 9-to-5 job in HR, Zhang found herself deeply inspired by her father’s dream and her cousin’s decision to join the army as a regular soldier. Overcoming her initial doubts about her physical fitness and concerns about being older than many of her peers, Zhang embarked on a new career path in the Singapore Armed Forces.
“My family has always been supportive of me, and my mother told me that my father would be proud of my decision. I’m doing this not only for myself but also to fulfil my father’s wish,” said Zhang.
To prepare for the physical demands of military training, Zhang dedicated herself to intense fitness routines, including running and various sports. Her hard work quickly paid off. During the initial phase of her service, she earned a silver medal in the Physical Fitness Test (IPPT). Within just a few months of joining the Armed Forces Officer Cadet Course, her physical fitness improved so significantly that she went on to win a gold medal.
Zhang’s story is a testament to resilience and dedication, proving that it’s never too late to pursue one’s dreams or to honour the aspirations of loved ones.
