Xi Jinping Calls for Unity and Persistence as China’s Covid-19 Strategy Enters New Phase

In his first address since policy changes, Xi stresses ongoing struggles as China adapts to new challenges in pandemic control.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasized the need for greater unity and collective effort as the country transitions into a “new phase” in its fight against Covid-19. This statement marked his first public remarks on the pandemic since the government significantly altered its approach three weeks ago, relaxing the strict lockdown and mass testing measures that had been in place for nearly three years.

In a televised New Year address, Xi acknowledged the immense challenges China had faced in combating the virus, noting that the country’s response had been continuously “optimized” based on changing circumstances. He expressed deep gratitude for the perseverance of medical staff, grassroots workers, and citizens, who remained steadfast despite the difficulties.

“Since the beginning of the pandemic, countless individuals, especially healthcare workers, have faced enormous hardship with unwavering resolve,” Xi remarked. “We are now entering a new phase of epidemic prevention and control, which still requires hard work and determination. Victory comes with persistence, and unity leads to success.”

Following China’s abrupt shift away from its zero-Covid policy earlier this month, the country has seen a rapid surge in cases, prompting concerns globally. In response, several countries, including Britain and France, have implemented new travel restrictions for those arriving from China, as economic activity continues to be affected by the evolving situation.
