President reaffirms commitment to strict policies despite rising doubts and disruptions.
Xi Jinping has firmly reaffirmed China’s commitment to its zero-Covid strategy, insisting that it is a “scientific and effective” approach despite mounting criticism and the negative impact on economic growth. In a speech to China’s senior officials, he specifically addressed the ongoing outbreak in Shanghai, declaring that the country had “won the battle to defend Wuhan” and would succeed in Shanghai as well. While other countries have relaxed Covid measures, China remains steadfast in its approach, continuing strict lockdowns, mass testing, and movement restrictions. Xi’s remarks were aimed at silencing doubts about the effectiveness of the policy, which has sparked protests and shortages. Meanwhile, the government reported thousands of new Covid cases, including in major cities like Shanghai and Beijing. The outbreak led to the postponement of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, set for September.
